About that blogging thing...

So my darling dear boyfriend, Todd, has started a blog. Again. Follow him! Maybe then he'll keep writing on it. ;) And of course he made me follow him, so I figured why not start one of my own too? I don't know how I feel about Blogger/Blogspot, but whatever, if I even bother to use it I can always e-move.

I've just finished my second day back to school. It's my third semester at Queens College. I still like the school and so far I've had some great professors, but I still hate its location and that I am without a major. I've spent these past three semesters banging out my general education requirements, or PLAS as QC calls it. The good news is that after this semester I will only have ONE MORE gen ed left! (And one W course, but whatever, that'll get in there somehow.) I'll also only have 3 courses left to finish my minor... Sooooo, I have to get going on that major thing.

I've got a lot of ideas floating around in my head. Ideally I'd really like to transfer to FIT for Fall '11 into the Communication Design 1-year AAS program. The only problem is that I really can't draw. With the application they ask for a portfolio...

Your portfolio should consist primarily of work done from direct observation, i.e. drawing and painting from what you see. These drawings might include self-portraits, still lifes, figure drawing, landscapes, or interiors. You should include work done in a variety of media like charcoal, pencil, watercolor, and acrylic and oil paints. We encourage you to include a sketchbook as part of your submission. 

You should already have strong drawing and two-dimensional design skills, as well as an understanding of color and composition. [...]. Your artwork should reflect your understanding of how to move the eye across a piece of paper or canvas using line and color, light and dark, balance and rhythm, all of which help form the concepts of design and composition. 

While we encourage work from direct observation, we do not discourage any work that reflects your creativity and sense of design. Computer art may supplement your portfolio, but it should not be its main focus.

Ummm. Yeah. So I'm going to try to work on that. I've been looking into drawing classes around here but I dunno.

I could also suck it up and major in Graphic Design at Queens. I didn't initially for two reasons: one, it requires FIVE Art History classes. Ugh. Two, it's not a school that's known for Graphic Design, and I don't want to end up jobless in a competitive industry. I don't think about reason two so much anymore because if I graduate with a killer portfolio, that's all that will matter really.

Another option would be to look into Queens's Interdisciplinary Studies major, or even further, the CUNY BA program (which I think is really awesome). In one of those I could build my own major, perhaps a "Web Design and Development" major, or a sort of "Design & Psychology" major (actually shown as an example on the CUNY BA site). I just don't want to end up too boxed in and have less career choices down the line.

So yeah. That's what I think about pretty much every day of my life. Because it feels like I have almost no direction, and it's frustrating. So I continue to try and figure it out. Maybe I'm finally making some progress.... I guess time will tell!
